The moment unfolded at Our Saviour’s Church, Ikoyi, during the closing minutes of the funeral service — the concluding event in a carefully curated three-day farewell for the grandson of the legendary nationalist, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

Ashiru had held himself together throughout the burial rites: a heartfelt Night of Tribute on Monday, December 1; a moving Wake-Keep on Wednesday, December 3 at Harbour Point, Victoria Island; and the solemn funeral service on Friday.
