Alaafin Owoade Vows to Retrieve Stolen Oyo Artefacts from Britain

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has pledged to collaborate with local and international communities to recover artefacts stolen from his ancient domain. He expressed his commitment to ensuring the return of artefacts taken from the Oyo Kingdom by British forces in 1895.

During this raid, British soldiers looted the Palace, taking artefacts that include rare works of art preserved for over 1,000 years. Some of these items were brought from Ile Ife by Oranmiyan, the first Alaafin of Oyo.

In a statement released on Tuesday, made available to the media by the Director of Media and Publicity to the Alaafin, Bode Durojaiye, Oba Owoade reaffirmed his determination to facilitate the repatriation of these cultural treasures, along with seeking compensation for their removal.

Nigeria has successfully retrieved Benin artefacts from Britain following extensive negotiations for the return of items looted during the 1897 British expedition. These recently repatriated artefacts were handed over to the Oba of Benin and are believed to hold significant historical, cultural, and spiritual importance. Their return marks a critical step in preserving Nigeria’s heritage and identity.

According to the statement, Oba Owoade has engaged with international organizations that have pledged support for the development of the Oyo Kingdom. Beyond heritage restoration, the traditional ruler has outlined his vision for socioeconomic development, particularly in youth empowerment. He has promised to provide vocational training for unemployed graduates to help them acquire practical skills that enhance their employability. Furthermore, he committed to supporting widows and widowers to improve their livelihoods.

As part of his developmental agenda, the Alaafin-elect revealed plans to assist graduates in acquiring cybersecurity skills, addressing the growing trend of young professionals seeking opportunities abroad.

“What is more, the development of health facilities has been my priority, and I want to be remembered for it during my reign,” Oba Owoade stated. His vision reflects a broader commitment to cultural preservation, economic empowerment, and infrastructural development within the Oyo Kingdom. Read More
