The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu to life imprisonment for terrorism, with the judge saying he spared him the death penalty out of mercy

BREAKING: Court Sentences Nnamdi Kanu to Life Imprisonment for Terrorism

The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of multiple terrorism offences.

Delivering judgment on Thursday, trial judge Justice James Omotosho said the offences legally warranted a death sentence, but he opted for leniency in what he described as an act of mercy.

He ruled, “He ought to be sentenced to death, but for the mercy of the court, I sentence him to life imprisonment for counts 1, 4, 5 and 6 instead of death sentence.”

For the remaining charges, the court issued additional penalties, 20 years imprisonment for Count 3 and 5 years imprisonment for Count 7

Justice Omotosho ordered that all sentences run concurrently, meaning Kanu will serve a life term.

The judge further directed that Kanu must not use any digital devices, including phones or computers. He should also be kept in protective custody, citing the sensitive nature of the case and security concerns. Read More
