The Edo State All Progressives Congress (APC) has disqualified incumbent Governor Godwin Obaseki from contesting in the primaries of party for the 2020 election.
Governor Obaseki was disqualified following allegations of inconsistencies in his academic certificates.
A screening panel set up by the ruling party to clear contenders for the party’s ticket ahead of the state governorship election in September announced Obaseki’s disqualification Friday.
Others also disqualified are Hon. Matthew Iduoroyekemwen and Engr. Chris Ogiemwonyi.

The committee, however, cleared Pastor Osagie Ize- Iyamu, Dr. Pius Odubu and Hon. Osaro Obazee.
Obaseki has been at loggerheads with his successor, Adams Oshiomhole, the party’s national chairman who is widely believed to have considerable influence over Edo politics.
Spokesperson to Obaseki, Crusoe Osagie, had said they expected that Oshiomhole-led APC will announce the disqualification Friday afternoon.
“Like he stated recently that he is the Supreme Court and the ultimate determiner of the fate of aspirants for governorship seat under the APC, he has executed his pre-conceived agenda of stopping Governor Obaseki from flying the flag of the party, at all cost,” Osagie said in a statement made available to the media on Friday.
“After pushing the failed narrative about Governor Obaseki’s educational qualification and meeting a brick wall with the University of Ibadan’s response, he resorted to using his characteristic brute force to disqualify the governor.”
Oshiomhole, however, is believed to be in support of Osagie Ize-Iyamu as the party’s candidate in the coming election.
