Outgoing president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, has approved the renaming of 15 airports after some prominent Nigerians.
The approval, according to a statement from the Ministry of Aviation signed by the Head of Press and Public Affairs, Odutayo Oluseyi, was given on Friday.
The Port Harcourt International Airport has been renamed Obafemi Jeremiah Awolowo International Airport, Nasarrawa International Airport was named after Sheikh Usman Danfodio, Ilorin International Airport named after Tunde Abdullahi Idiagbon, Kaduna International Airport named after Hassan Usman Katsina and Maiduguri International Airport renamed Muhammadu Buhari International Airport
The other airports include, Ibadan International Airport (Samuel Ladoke Akintola), Makurdi International Airport renamed after Joseph Sarwuan Tarka; Minna International Airport renamed Mall Abubakar Imam; Osubi International Airport renamed Alfred Diete Spiff; and Yola International Airport now known as Lamido Aliyu Mustapha Airport.
Others are Akure International Airport named after Olumuyiwa Bernard Aliu; Benin International Airport now known as Oba Akinzua II; Dutse International Airport renamed Muhammed Nuhu Sanusi; Ebonyi International Airport now known as Chuba Wilberforce Okadigbo; and Gombe International Airport renamed Brigadier Zakari Maimalari.
