Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru Resigns Amid National Security Emergency, Cites Health Grounds

Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned his position with immediate effect, marking a major shake-up in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s security cabinet at a time the country is battling heightened insecurity.

Badaru’s resignation was confirmed on Monday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in an interview with Channels Television. According to Onanuga, the minister stepped down on health grounds.

In a resignation letter dated December 1 and addressed to President Tinubu, Badaru formally announced his exit from office. Onanuga said the President has accepted the resignation and expressed appreciation for the former minister’s service to the nation.

“President Tinubu accepted Abubakar’s resignation and thanked him for his services to the nation,” Onanuga stated.

A State House press release later reaffirmed the development, noting that the minister’s departure takes effect immediately.
