As Detty December peaks, the Lagos State Ministry of Waterfront Development urges residents and visitors to follow safety rules at beaches, lagoons, and boat jetties

Detty December: Lagos Government Warns on Waterfront Safety Amid Festive Rush

As Lagos fully slips into Detty December mode, with beaches buzzing, boat rides surging, and waterfronts brimming with festive excitement, the Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development (MWID) has issued a strong safety advisory to residents and visitors enjoying the season.

The warning comes amid increased holiday activities across lagoons, beaches, and coastal corridors, where large crowds traditionally gather during the yuletide period. Authorities say while the season is meant for relaxation and celebration, ignoring basic safety precautions could lead to avoidable accidents.

The Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Dayo Bush Alebiosu, urged Lagosians to remain vigilant, particularly around water bodies, stressing that festive-period mishaps are often preventable.

“Please remember the important waterfront safety tips: be mindful when visiting waterfront areas, especially during high tide or period of heavy wave activity; use only authorized or properly equipped jetties for any boat travel; avoid night time swimming; and do not board unregistered or unsafe boats,” Alebiosu said.

The commissioner also cautioned boat operators and users to strictly adhere to safety regulations, while reminding parents and guardians of their critical role in protecting children near water.

“Teach children basic waterfront safety and ensure they are supervised at all times when near water,” he emphasized.

Beyond personal safety, the Lagos State Government appealed to residents to help safeguard the coastal environment by promptly reporting suspicious or illegal activities along waterfronts.

“Report any suspicious activity such as illegal dredging or unsafe waterfront structures to MWID or the nearest relevant authority. Your safety remains our top priority. Together, we can enjoy the season while protecting our beautiful coastal environment,” the commissioner added.

Officials stressed that the advisory is not intended to dampen the festive spirit but to ensure the protection of lives and property during one of Lagos’ busiest periods of the year.

According to Alebiosu, safety along Lagos waterways is a shared responsibility requiring cooperation from residents, visitors, and operators alike.

As celebrations reach their peak, the state government reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining safety and order across waterfront areas, warning that negligence could result in preventable tragedies.

“Our lagoon cannot speak but we can act,” the commissioner concluded.

The Lagos State Government, through the senior cabinet member, wished residents a joyful, peaceful, and safe holiday season, urging everyone to celebrate responsibly while preserving the state’s vibrant and iconic coastal environment.
