The Federal Government has showered praise on the Super Eagles following their hard-fought campaign at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), assuring the team that Nigerians remain deeply proud of their effort despite a painful semi-final exit.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, commended the players for representing Nigeria with pride, dignity, and resilience throughout the tournament.

“Nigeria remains proud of you,” Idris said, stressing that the Super Eagles displayed character, teamwork, and commitment, even in defeat.

The minister noted that the team’s attitude and fighting spirit reflected the true values behind the nation’s iconic green and white colours.

“Even in defeat, you showed character, teamwork and resilience, and those qualities matter deeply to the nation you represent,” he said.

‘Wearing the Green and White Is Bigger Than Winning’

According to Idris, the Super Eagles reminded Nigerians that playing for the country goes beyond match results, describing the national jersey as a powerful symbol of courage, unity, and perseverance.

“You reminded us that wearing the green and white is about courage, unity, and never giving up. Football has its highs and lows, but your effort and commitment throughout this tournament have earned the respect and gratitude of Nigerians at home and abroad,” the minister added.

He urged the players to remain united, learn from the experience, and come back stronger, assuring them of the nation’s continued backing.

“Hold your heads high, stay united and return stronger. Nigeria is grateful for the joy and hope you gave us during this competition, and the nation stands with you, always,” Idris said.

How the Super Eagles Fell Short

Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 journey ended on Wednesday night after a tense 4–2 penalty shootout defeat to host nation Morocco, following a goalless draw after extra time at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.

The semi-final encounter was fiercely contested, with Morocco enjoying greater attacking dominance, recording 16 shots compared to Nigeria’s two. However, both teams were kept alive by outstanding goalkeeping performances from Nigeria’s Stanley Nwabali and Morocco’s Yassine Bounou.

Nigeria’s attacking stars, Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, found it difficult to break down a disciplined Moroccan defence, as the hosts eventually sealed their place in the final through penalties.

Despite the disappointment, the Super Eagles’ campaign has been widely applauded for its fighting spirit, discipline, and moments of brilliance—qualities the Federal Government says have once again united Nigerians behind the national team. Read More
