Former FCT Minister Jerry Useni Passes Away

The Executive Governor of Plateau State, Barrister Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has formally announced the passing of Lt. General Jeremiah Timbut Useni, a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). General Useni died on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at the age of 82, after a prolonged illness.

In a statement made in Jos, Governor Mutfwang expressed that General Useni’s death is a tremendous loss not only to his immediate family but also to the Nigerian Armed Forces, Plateau State, and the entire nation.

The Governor highlighted General Useni’s exemplary leadership and unwavering commitment to public service, noting the indelible mark he left on Nigeria’s security and political landscape. He emphasized that General Useni’s tireless efforts to promote peace and security, particularly in Northern Nigeria and Plateau State, will always be remembered.

Mutfwang reflected on General Useni’s distinguished career, which included serving as Minister of Transport, Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army, and Minister of the FCT. After retiring from the military, General Useni transitioned into politics. He served as the Deputy Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and was later elected Senator representing the Plateau South Senatorial District in 2015 under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

The Governor praised General Useni’s life of selfless service and noted his significant contributions to the military, politics, and his community. He emphasized that the General’s legacy of compassion, kindness, and dedication to the well-being of others will continue to live on through those he impacted.

“On behalf of my family, the government, and the peace-loving people of Plateau State, I extend my deepest sympathies to the President, the Nigerian Armed Forces, General Useni’s immediate family, and all those mourning the loss of this distinguished elder statesman,” Governor Mutfwang said. He prayed for God to grant strength and fortitude to the family, Plateau State, and the nation during this irreplaceable loss. He also sought God’s divine presence to provide comfort and solace in the days ahead.
