Several lodgers who were said to have been whisked away were described as suspected fraudsters, otherwise known as Yahoo boys
Some unidentified men in the dead of the night reportedly stormed Conference Hotel located in Abeokuta, shooting repeatedly into the air.
The magnificent hotel which belongs to a former Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, towers on the Golf Resort Drive, Presidential Boulevard, Oke Mosan, Abeokuta, the State capital.
The invaders, who many suspected to be officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) whisked yet-to-be-identified persons.
According to Daily Post, some of those taken away from the hotel were guests and photographers at an award presentation ceremony held within the premises.
Several lodgers who were said to have been whisked away were described as suspected fraudsters, otherwise known as Yahoo boys.
Information gathered also indicate a member of staff of the hotel and a photographer at the award presentation, went missing after the operation.
A source was quoted to have informed that the photographer and others picked up by the men were driven forcefully to Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, saying “I have not been able to speak with him since 2am when he was taken away.”
However, there was confusion when spokesperson of the EFCC said they were not aware of the operation.
The Public Relations Officer of the EFCC, Ibadan office, Tokunbo Odebiyi, said, “I have no information about the operation. I’m not aware of any invasion of any hotel in Abeokuta.”
But, the media officer to the former Governor Daniel, Steve Oliyide, confirmed that some “unknown gunmen” stormed the hotel.
“Around 2am on Sunday, November 28, 2021, some unknown gunmen believed to be acting at the behest of one of the Anti-graft agencies stormed the premises of the hotel facility in Abeokuta in search of an unknown yahoo boy,” Oliyide stated.
He revealed further that “unnecessary shots were fired,” adding that “our innocent guests were scared.”
Daniel’s spokesman explained that no life was lost as security agencies were able to restore law and order.
