A Kaduna High Court has convicted and sentenced Faruk Suleiman Ololade for impersonation and attempted online fraud, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission said in a statement.

Ololade, who posed as an Australian citizen on social media to deceive unsuspecting members of the public, faced a one-count charge of impersonation before Justice Jaafaru Zubairu. He pleaded guilty when the charge was read in court.

Prosecution counsel, Moses Arumemi, urged the court to convict and sentence the defendant. Justice Zubairu subsequently sentenced Ololade to three years in prison, with an option to pay a ₦300,000 fine.

The court also ordered the forfeiture of Ololade’s Redmi 15C mobile phone, which was used in committing the crime, to the Federal Government.

The EFCC added that Ololade was arrested following credible intelligence linking him to online fraud activities in the Turaki Signboard area of Kaduna.
