Lagos State House of Assembly suspends planned demolitions in Makoko following resident protests

Lagos Assembly Suspends Makoko Demolitions After Resident & Activist Protests
In a major relief for thousands of residents, the Lagos State House of Assembly has ordered an immediate suspension of planned demolitions in the historic Makoko community.
The announcement came Tuesday from Majority Leader Noheem Adams, who spoke on behalf of Speaker Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa and fellow lawmakers following intense protests by residents, civil society groups, and activists against the impending bulldozing of homes and structures.
The directive follows a crucial meeting between lawmakers and community representatives, where concerns were thoroughly discussed.
Adams emphasized that the House is treating the matter with utmost seriousness and has directed all ongoing demolitions to stop forthwith.
“On behalf of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, and honourable members of this House, we are taking this matter seriously. All ongoing demolitions should be stopped,” Adams stated.
He further revealed that the Assembly will collaborate with relevant ministries and agencies to review the issues surrounding the proposed demolitions, ensuring all stakeholders—including residents—are properly engaged in the process.
The suspension brings temporary respite to Makoko, a vibrant waterfront community long facing eviction pressures under various urban renewal initiatives. Residents and advocates had staged demonstrations highlighting the humanitarian impact of mass displacements without adequate alternatives.
The development signals a shift toward more inclusive dialogue on Lagos’ waterfront redevelopment plans, with the House pledging a balanced approach that respects both development goals and community rights.
