Lagos Police Restrict Egungun Festival to Approved Venues, Ban Street Processions

The Lagos State Police Command has imposed strict restrictions on activities linked to the ongoing Egungun masquerade festival, limiting celebrations to approved outing points and designated venues across the state.

According to the directive, masqueraders and their followers are prohibited from staging public processions or street marches. The move, police say, is aimed at safeguarding lives and property, while also protecting the rights of residents of other faiths.

Police spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed the measure in a statement on Sunday, noting that recent violent clashes between rival masquerade groups had led to destruction of both public and private property.

“Egungun masquerades, practitioners, and supporters are to strictly abide by these restrictions. They are also required to notify the Commissioner of Police and apply for security ahead of any outing,” the statement read.

The Command warned it would enforce the law against any masquerade group or adherent found disturbing public peace, violating human rights, or causing disorder during the festival period.

While appealing for compliance, Hundeyin urged cooperation from practitioners to avoid escalation of violence.

“The Lagos State Police Command therefore implores all Egungun masquerades, adherents, and supporters to cooperate with the police during this festival period, ensure compliance with the laws of the land, so as to sustain peace, law, and order in Lagos State,” he said.

However, observers believe that the decision reflects growing security concerns in Lagos, where traditional festivities have at times spiraled into violence, raising tensions in densely populated communities. Read More
