Nigeria’s Lithium Revolution And The End Of Economic Surrender | By Olabode Opeseitan

By Olabode Opeseitan

For decades, Nigeria stood at the edge of promise—rich in minerals, rich in minds, yet poor in outcomes. The story was painfully familiar: foreign firms arrived with fanfare, extracted our birthright, and left behind dust, debt, and disillusionment. Communities watched trucks roll out with wealth they would never touch. Governments signed deals that mortgaged tomorrow for pennies. And the people—resilient, brilliant, hopeful—were told to wait.

But something is shifting. Quietly. Purposefully.

In the ochre hills of Nasarawa, machines now hum with intent—not to extract and export, but to refine and retain. Nigeria’s first lithium processing plant, commissioned in 2024, is not just a factory—it is a statement. It says: We will no longer sell our future raw. It says: We will build here, employ here, prosper here.

This is not a lone effort. It is a coordinated uprising of vision. Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reformist leadership, Nigeria has declared an end to the era of economic surrender. His administration has banned the export of unprocessed lithium, demanded value addition, and insisted that every investor must leave behind more than profit—they must leave behind progress.

And they are listening.

By mid-2025, six lithium factories—some operational, others nearing completion—dot the Nigerian landscape. From Avatar New Energy’s 1-million-ton-per-year plant in Nasarawa to Ming Xin’s 1,500-ton-per-day facility in Kaduna, the numbers are staggering. Jiuling Lithium Mining and Canmax Technologies are investing hundreds of millions more, with new plants rising near Abuja and along the Kaduna-Niger border. ReElement Technologies and Jupiter Lithium have joined the charge, bringing UK and US capital into the fold.

Together, these factories will form the foundation of a new industrial base. But the true measure of this revolution is not in tonnage, but in value. And the numbers are staggering in their own right.

Based on direct projections from the landmark $1.3 billion investment led by the African Finance Corporation and the Solid Minerals Development Fund, Nigeria’s initial lithium factories are expected to generate approximately $1.2 billion in annual economic output once fully operational. This is not a distant dream—it is the stated target for the first wave of major processing facilities in Kaduna and Nasarawa.

But this is merely the beginning. This $1.2 billion base is the proof of concept—the critical first step that validates Nigeria’s strategy of banning raw exports and demanding local beneficiation. Industry analysts, seeing this momentum, forecast that as more plants come online and export supply chains mature, total lithium sector revenues could surge to $4.2 billion by 2025, and reach as high as $8.5 billion by 2035.

The math of sovereignty is now clear. Even at this initial stage, the state’s share—captured through taxes, royalties, wages, and local procurement—will far exceed the crumbs of the past. This time, the wealth won’t vanish into offshore accounts or foreign boardrooms. It will build roads, fund schools, power homes, and pay salaries. It is the fruit of a policy that insists: We will no longer sell our future raw.

But this revolution is not just economic. It is emotional. It is moral.

It is the story of a country reclaiming its dignity. Of a government saying never again to the exploitation of its people and land. Of communities like Endo and Kangimi, once forgotten, now becoming hubs of innovation and employment. Over 50,000 jobs are projected—engineers, welders, drivers, cooks, teachers. The ripple effect is real.

Backing this vision with precision and resolve is the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Henry Dele Alake—a man whose tenure has brought rare dynamism and order to a sector long plagued by opacity and neglect. Under his watch, Nigeria’s solid minerals space has shifted from chaos to clarity, from speculation to structure. He has ensured the implementation of President Tinubu’s policies in the solid mineral sector with meticulous fidelity. His administrative mantras are not just technical—they are transformational, rooted in discipline, transparency, and a fierce commitment to national interest.

And it is the story of Africa rising—not as a supplier of raw materials, but as a manufacturer of solutions. Lithium powers the batteries in electric cars, solar panels, and smartphones. It is the mineral of the future. And Nigeria, with its reserves and resolve, is positioning itself not just to participate, but to lead.

President Tinubu’s stance is clear. When global giants came asking for raw lithium, he said no. Not out of defiance, but out of duty. “The era of exporting raw solid minerals from Nigeria is over,” he declared. And with that, he drew a line in the sand—a line between the past we endured and the future we deserve.

This is not a miracle. It is a movement. A silent revolution, built on policy, discipline, and belief. It is the kind of change that doesn’t scream—it works. And it is working.

So let the cynics watch. Let the skeptics wait. Nigeria is not asking for applause. It is building. Deliberately. Powerfully. Permanently.

The ground beneath our feet is no longer just soil—it is sovereignty. And from it, a new Nigeria is rising. One that will never again trade its birthright for peanuts. One that will refine its minerals, its vision, and its destiny.

This is our lithium dawn. And it is irreversible. Read More

Police Debunks Viral ‘Wanted’ Poster of Nollywood Star Iyabo Ojo

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has dismissed a viral social media “wanted” notice targeting Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo, describing it as fake and misleading.

The notice, which claimed that the actress was wanted by the Office of the Inspector General of Police Monitoring Unit, was widely circulated online earlier this week. But in a statement posted on its official Facebook page, the NPF clarified that it never issued such a notice.

“FAKE NEWS ALERT! This ‘WANTED’ poster of actress Iyabo Ojo did not emanate from the Nigeria Police Force. It is false, misleading & was never posted on any official NPF platform. Disregard & stop spreading fake news,” the statement read.

The Force further cautioned Nigerians to verify news only from official police channels to avoid falling victim to misinformation.

“Verify only from official NPF channels,” it stressed.

The clarification comes amid growing concerns over the spread of false information on social media, especially involving high-profile figures. See post

Salesgirl Arrested for Stealing Cash, Phones Worth Over N29million, Rents House for Boyfriend

The Niger State Police Command has arrested a 23-year-old woman, Sarah Ogbonna, for allegedly stealing mobile phones and cash worth over N29 million from a shop where she worked as a salesgirl at the Obasanjo Commercial Complex in Minna.

Police said the suspect, who lives on Okada Road in Minna, allegedly used part of the stolen money to rent and furnish an apartment for her boyfriend, Samuel Bello, in the Sauka-Kauta area of the city. Bello is currently at large. She was also said to have transferred additional funds to him.

During interrogation, Sarah reportedly confessed to the theft and disclosed that she took part in a weekly online financial contribution of N150,000.

Her elder sister, 30-year-old Mercy Ogbonna, was also arrested for allegedly receiving multiple transfers from Sarah to address family expenses, including house rent, food, and other necessities.

Two other suspects were picked up in connection with the case: 23-year-old Ruth Emmanuel, another salesgirl who allegedly participated in the theft before resigning, and 32-year-old Nurudeen Musa, a trader at the Obasanjo Complex accused of receiving stolen phones from Sarah and reselling them at giveaway prices.

According to the state’s police spokesperson, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, the arrests followed a report filed on August 8, 2025, by the shop owner, a phone dealer at the complex.

“Immediately the report was received, police operatives of the division arrested the said Sarah, and during interrogation, she confessed to the allegation, stating that she had been working in the shop since 2023 and she wouldn’t know if what she had taken so far could amount to N29 million, but a sum of N700,000 was immediately recovered from her,” Abiodun said.

He added that Sarah’s confession led to the arrest of her accomplices on August 9.

Recovered items from Sarah’s residence include two power generators, one smart TV, a freezer, four wigs reportedly worth N500,000 each, a gas cylinder, shoes, canvas, bags, clothes, and various household furniture.

Police said investigations are ongoing, while efforts are underway to track down Bello and other possible accomplices. Read More

IGP Egbetokun Elevates Police Medical Section to Directorate in Landmark Reform

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has approved the elevation of the Nigeria Police Force Medical Section into a full-fledged Directorate of Medical Services, marking a significant step in ongoing police reforms.

The decision, announced Wednesday in Abuja, reflects the Force’s renewed commitment to prioritizing the health and welfare of its personnel as a cornerstone of morale, professionalism, and operational effectiveness.

In a statement, the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the new Directorate would institutionalize medical services within the police structure, ensuring better coordination, enhanced expertise, and long-term investment in both preventive and emergency healthcare.

He noted that the benefits will extend beyond serving and retired officers, also to cover host communities across the country.

The Directorate will be headed by the Force Chief Medical Director, who will supervise other directors and medical professionals, ensuring specialized oversight, efficient resource management, and modernization of police healthcare services.

Egbetokun stressed that the reform was more than a welfare initiative, describing it as a strategic investment in national security.

“By safeguarding the health of officers and their families, the Nigeria Police Force enhances its collective capacity to discharge its constitutional mandate of protecting lives and property,” the IGP said.

He further reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to comprehensive reforms aimed at boosting morale, enhancing professionalism, and building a sustainable welfare system for police personnel nationwide. Read More

Presidency Denies ‘Empty Booth’ Claims, Says Nigeria Is Driving Strategic Deals at TICAD9

“The Nigerian delegation didn’t come to Yokohama and Tokyo to attend any trade expo. Our mission is to drive optimum performance through strategic engagements with global partners”

Presidency Denies ‘Empty Booth’ Claims, Says Nigeria Is Driving Strategic Deals at TICAD9

The Presidency has dismissed viral social media claims that Nigeria had an “empty booth” at the 9th Tokyo International Conference for African Development (TICAD9) in Yokohama, Japan, insisting the country’s mission is focused on substantive partnerships rather than optics.

In a statement on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the video circulating online misrepresented Nigeria’s participation at the triennial summit, where President Bola Tinubu is leading the delegation.

“The Nigerian delegation didn’t come to Yokohama and Tokyo to attend any trade expo. Our mission is to drive optimum performance through strategic engagements with global partners,” Onanuga clarified.

He noted that Nigeria’s team, in collaboration with Corporate Nigeria, was “laser-focused” on securing outcomes in power, industry, and agriculture rather than mounting displays at an open trade forum.

Supporting this position, Otega Ogra, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Digital Engagements, explained that the space seen in the viral clip was not a pavilion but part of a designated spillover area. Such rooms, he said, are typically used by delegates without access to the main auditorium as workspaces, quiet zones, or hubs for side meetings.

“Several other countries also had spaces that were either quiet or lightly used, making it neither unusual nor a sign of disengagement,” Ogra explained. He further emphasized that Nigeria’s participation is anchored on substance, not showmanship. “We do not need to mimic others to prove our relevance. Visibility is not the only metric. Value is. While some chase optics, Nigerian officials have been working deliberately, consistently, and with focus.”

Onanuga highlighted that President Tinubu is scheduled to hold bilateral sessions with executives of Toyota Corporation, CFAO, UN-Habitat, UNDP, and the International Finance Corporation, while ministers are pursuing sectoral agreements on the sidelines.

For example, Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu is leading negotiations on multiple projects funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). These include the Lagos-Ogun Power Transmission System Improvement project to strengthen grid stability, a vocational training partnership between the National Power Training Institute (NAPTIN) and JICA, and the $190 million Distributed Access Through Renewable Energy Scale-up project. Adelabu is also in talks with global OEMs such as Toshiba and Hitachi.

Similarly, the Bank of Industry, under Managing Director Dr. Supo Olusi, is engaging JICA and other multilateral institutions as part of its annual global syndication of funds.

Onanuga concluded by cautioning Nigerians against being misled by social media narratives. “Nigeria is fully and well represented at TICAD9 and is part of the key conversations shaping Africa’s partnerships with Japan and other global players,” he said.

US Court Hears Plea for Leniency as Nigerian Monarch Admits $4.2m COVID Relief Fraud

The Apetu of Ipetumodu, Oba Joseph Oloyede, has begged for leniency before a United States court after admitting his role in a $4.2 million COVID-19 relief fraud that has rattled both Nigeria and the U.S.

In a sentencing memorandum filed on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, before Judge Christopher Boyko of the Northern District of Ohio, the monarch’s legal team argued that the unprecedented disruption of the coronavirus pandemic played a central role in his actions.

“COVID-19 affected all of us differently. Conduct that we would never expect from ourselves or others sometimes manifested itself as we encountered a completely different society,” his counsel stated. While conceding that the pandemic was no excuse, the defense insisted it was a major factor for the 62-year-old royal, who also struggled with health challenges during the outbreak.

Oba Oloyede, who migrated to the United States in the late 1990s, was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in May 2024 after disappearing from Nigeria two months earlier. His unexplained absence sparked concern in Ipetumodu, Osun State, particularly after he missed major cultural festivals, including Odun Egungun and Odun Edi.

Prosecutors alleged that he masterminded a scheme in which six companies under his control filed fraudulent applications for U.S. federal relief funds through the Paycheck Protection Programme (PPP) and the Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) scheme.

Court filings revealed that portions of the funds were laundered through personal and corporate accounts. Investigators also seized a Medina County property in Ohio and confiscated more than $96,000 from one of his company’s accounts.

Before returning to Nigeria in 2019 to ascend the throne of Ipetumodu, Oba Oloyede had enjoyed a reputation in the United States as a banker and adjunct professor. His lawyers stressed that his involvement in the fraud was “a stark deviation” from his previous record of responsibility, service, and community leadership. They noted that he had expressed remorse and taken full responsibility.

The monarch, a father of six and foster parent to several others, was granted bail after surrendering both his Nigerian and U.S. passports. He has since remained under strict court supervision.

Sentencing is scheduled for August 26, 2025, with Judge Boyko expected to weigh possible penalties ranging from a lengthy prison term to significant asset forfeiture. Read More

Ondo Police Rescue Kidnap Victim in Daring Forest Operation, Three Suspects Killed, Two Arrested

The Ondo State Police Command has successfully rescued a 60-year-old kidnap victim, Mr. Tijani Aremu, after a dramatic gun battle with suspected kidnappers in Ikare.

According to a statement from the Command on Wednesday, operatives attached to the Ikare Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and supported by local forest hunters, launched the operation on August 20, 2025, after Aremu’s abduction.

The kidnappers had demanded millions of naira in ransom and fixed a location for the exchange. Acting on intelligence, the police laid an ambush with the support of the victim’s family. When the suspects arrived to collect the ransom, they engaged security operatives in a fierce gun duel.

“One of the kidnappers was neutralized on the spot while a single-barrel rifle was recovered. Others fled with bullet wounds,” the Command said.

A subsequent combing of nearby forests led to the discovery of two additional lifeless bodies of suspected kidnappers, raising the number neutralized to three. Two suspects — identified as 20-year-old Yahaya Isa and one Ismail Ismail — were arrested.

The operation culminated in the safe rescue of Mr. Aremu, who was found unharmed. He has since been taken to the hospital for medical checks and will soon reunite with his family.

Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, commended the bravery of the operatives and local hunters. He also lauded the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, for his “people-centered policing strategy and emphasis on community cooperation,” which he said provided the framework for the successful rescue.

The Police Command urged residents to remain calm and continue supporting security agencies with timely information.

“This operation is a clear testament to what can be achieved when security agencies and community stakeholders work hand in hand. Together, we will make Ondo State unsafe for criminals and secure for law-abiding citizens,” the statement added. Read More
