Nigeria Customs Seizes N1.72 Billion Worth of Smuggled Rice, Other Goods in One Month

The Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone A, of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has ramped up its fight against smuggling, confiscating contraband valued at N1.72 billion in the past month. The haul underscores the agency’s resolve to safeguard Nigeria’s borders and economy.

In a press briefing in Lagos, Kola Oladeji, Customs Area Controller for FOU Zone A, revealed that the seizures included 3,832 bags of 50kg foreign parboiled rice—enough to fill seven trucks—along with 27 used (Tokunbo) vehicles. The intercepted items also featured 494 jerrycans of petrol (14,820 litres), 27 bales of second-hand clothing, 95 bags of charcoal, and 3,643kg of Cannabis Sativa. Six suspects were apprehended in connection with these smuggling operations.

Oladeji credited the breakthrough to heightened surveillance across South-Western states, targeting those undermining Nigeria’s economy through illegal trade. “These efforts align with the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023, enforcing strict compliance with import and export laws,” he said.

Over the past month, the unit recorded 82 interceptions, a testament to its aggressive anti-smuggling stance. Oladeji praised the tireless work of customs officers, whose patrols and intelligence-driven operations were pivotal to the success. “We’re committed to tackling illegal trade and its economic risks while raising public awareness about the dangers of smuggling,” he added.

In addition to enforcement, the unit contributed N72.4 million to government coffers by issuing debit notes to importers who had underpaid duties at seaports. This reflects ongoing trade facilitation efforts led by Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi, including initiatives like the Time Release Study (TRS), Advance Ruling, and the Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) scheme, which aim to boost efficiency and revenue.

The Nigeria Customs Service remains focused on bolstering national security and economic growth, cracking down on illicit trade to protect local industries and ensure adherence to government regulations. Read More
