Nigerian Football Legend Christian Chukwu Passes Away at 74, Tinubu Mourns Icon
Christian Chukwu, former Nigerian captain and coach, died early Saturday at 74, leaving behind a towering legacy in Nigerian football. The cause of his death remains undisclosed.
Olusegun Odegbami, Chukwu’s teammate from Nigeria’s 1980 Africa Cup of Nations triumph, confirmed the news to Channels Television. “Between 9:00 and 10:00 this morning, ‘Chairman’ Christian Chukwu, one of Nigeria’s greatest footballers, passed on,” Odegbami said, noting he learned of the loss from mutual teammate Emmanuel Okala.
“May his soul find peace, and may his family find solace.”
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu expressed profound grief, describing Chukwu as a “symbol of excellence and patriotism” in a statement issued by his Special Adviser, Bayo Onanuga.
Tinubu extended condolences to Chukwu’s family, friends, and the global football community, praising his enduring impact. “Chukwu brought joy to millions, mentored countless players, and embodied Nigerian sportsmanship,” he said.
Nicknamed “Chairman” for his commanding presence, Chukwu led the Green Eagles to Nigeria’s first AFCON title in 1980.
As Super Eagles coach, he secured a bronze medal at the 2004 AFCON. His club career with Enugu Rangers was marked by multiple national titles and the 1977 African Cup Winners’ Cup victory.
Tinubu hailed Chukwu’s lifelong dedication to football and national pride, stating, “His legacy lives on in the trophies he won, the lives he touched, and the thrilling moments he created.”
