The Ogun state government on Monday took delivery of doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.

The governor of the state, Prince Dapo Abiodun, confirmed the delivery via his verified Tweeter handle.

The development indicates that Ogun is the first state in Nigeria to receive the vaccine, having met the requirements for disbursement.

The long-awaited vaccine arrived in the country on March 2 courtesy of the UN-led COVAX facility, which donated 3,924,000 doses to Nigeria.

Hours before the launch of the vaccination, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) gave the final approval for use of the doses in the country.

Nigeria commenced its COVID-19 vaccination with frontline health workers in Abuja last Friday.

So far, aside from some frontline health workers, President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, among other government officials, are some of those who have received the vaccine.

The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) has, however, asked Nigerians to register online to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
