The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Navy and former Governor of Ogun State, Senator Gbenga Daniel, has stated that Nigeria cannot afford to lose the oil-rich Tongeji Island, just as the country lose out to Cameroon in the ownership claim of the Bakassi Peninsula.
He added that importance of the island to the country’s oil industry makes it a valuable asset that must be roundly protected using all appropriate measures.
Senator Daniel, during a media briefing after an oversight function at the Western Naval Command, Lagos, emphasized the importance of preventing the abandonment of Tongeji Island.
Tongeji Island, known for its stunning waterfront and scenic beauty, is situated in Ipokia LGA of Ogun State. With its proximity to Benin Republic and recent discoveries of crude oil, Daniel urged proactive measures from both the Ogun State Government and the Federal Government to develop the island and harness its abundant natural resources.
OGD, as the Senator is fondly addressed by followers, disclosed that the Federal Government and the committee are strategically planning to ensure the protection of Tongeji Island, citing security reasons for not disclosing specific strategies.
He also expressed confidence in the Navy’s capability to safeguard the island, highlighting the urgent need for a jetty in the Badagry area of Lagos to enhance naval operations.
Acknowledging the Navy’s challenges, including underfunding, Senator Daniel assured that the committee would advocate for increased funding and spare parts acquisition. He thanked President Bola Tinubu for approving a supplementary budget to support the military and Navy, emphasizing transparency in budgetary disbursement.
