Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has criticised Ghanaian referee Daniel Laryea’s officiating after Nigeria’s AFCON semi-final loss to Morocco, calling it “that bad.”

Osimhen Blasts AFCON Refereeing as Nigeria Crash Out on Penalties Against Morocco

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has delivered a blunt verdict on the officiating of Ghanaian referee Daniel Laryea following Nigeria’s painful exit from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Nigeria were eliminated on Wednesday after losing 4–2 on penalties to host nation Morocco, following a tense goalless draw after extra time at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, Rabat.

Speaking after the match, the Galatasaray forward did not hide his frustration with the referee’s performance, describing it as deeply disappointing.

“The game was nothing to write home about in terms of the officiating; it was that bad,” Osimhen said.

Despite his criticism, the Nigerian striker was quick to acknowledge Morocco’s achievement and commend his teammates for their resilience against a strong opponent.

“I have to say a very big congratulations to the Moroccans, and also I am proud of my team for the kind of fight we put up against a very good quality side,” he added.

Osimhen will now turn his attention to Nigeria’s third-place playoff clash against Egypt on Saturday, where he hopes to help the Super Eagles end their AFCON campaign on a positive note.

His comments echo the frustration within the Nigerian camp, as fellow Super Eagles defender Bright Osayi-Samuel had earlier slammed Laryea’s officiating during the encounter.

However, the referee’s performance drew contrasting reactions elsewhere, with Ghanaian lawmaker Patrick Yaw Boamah, a member of the Parliament of Ghana, publicly praising Laryea for what he described as “outstanding officiating.”

The conflicting assessments have added to the post-match controversy surrounding one of the tournament’s most hotly debated fixtures.
