Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo on Wednesday decorated Usman Alkali Baba with his new rank of Inspector- General of Police (IGP).
On Tuesday, President Muhammadu Buhari surprisingly sacked Mohammed Adamu as the IGP before the expiration of his tenure extension.
He had been due for retirement in February, but he got a three-month extension.
Adamu was in Imo state to assess the damage caused by the attacks on prison and a police building when he was sacked.
Until his appointment, Baba was the deputy inspector-general of police, Force criminal investigation department, force headquarters.
Since Baba’s appointment is subject to approval by the Senate, he will hold the position in an acting position until confirmed.
Osinbajo, who was not officially made acting president when Buhari went on his latest medical trip to the UK, has been active in the president’s absence.
He went to Ebonyi state following attacks by yet-to-be-identified gunmen which left scores dead.
The VP was also in Imo on Tuesday and visited the damaged facilities after inaugurating projects by the state government.
The decoration of service chiefs and IGPs is traditionally presided over by the president, with the VP usually in attendance.
It is not yet clear when Buhari will return to the country.
