Police Summon Emir Sanusi II Over Fatal Sallah Procession Incident in Kano
The Nigeria Police Force has invited Muhammad Sanusi II, the 16th Emir of Kano, for questioning following a violent incident during the recent Eid-el-Fitr celebrations in Kano State.
The clash, which occurred during the Emir’s traditional procession from the Eid prayer ground to his palace, claimed the life of vigilante member Surajo Rabiu and left another individual injured, casting a shadow over the festive occasion.
The summons, as reported by PRNigeria, was formalized in a letter dated April 4, 2025, signed by Commissioner of Police Olajide Rufus Ibitoye on behalf of the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Force Intelligence Department (FID), Abuja.
The letter reads: “I have the directives of the Inspector General of Police, through the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force Intelligence Department (FID), to invite you for an investigative meeting regarding an incident that occurred during the Sallah celebration within your domain.”
The Emir is required to appear at the FID headquarters in Abuja by 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.
The incident follows a contentious ban on the traditional Durbar festival by the Kano State Police Command, enacted days before Eid-el-Fitr due to heightened security concerns. Despite the prohibition, intended to prevent unrest, the procession took place, leading to the fatal altercation. In response, State Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Adamu Bakori established an eight-member Special Investigation Panel to probe the circumstances of the violence.
According to PRNigeria, the Emir’s palace has not issued an official statement regarding the summons as of now.
The situation highlights ongoing tensions in Kano State, where traditional authority, public safety, and law enforcement intersect amid a fragile security landscape. Read More
