Seun Kuti has slammed Wizkid fans for comparing the Afrobeats star to his father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, describing it as disrespectful and ignorant

Comparing Wizkid to Fela Is an Insult – Seun Kuti Fires at Wizkid FC

Grammy-nominated musician Seun Kuti, son of late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has described it as an insult to compare Afrobeats superstar Wizkid to his father.

Seun Kuti made the statement during a recent Instagram livestream, where he warned Wizkid’s fanbase, popularly known as Wizkid FC, to stop referring to the Ojuelegba crooner as the modern-day Fela.

According to him, such comparisons show a deep misunderstanding of Fela’s legacy, ideology and impact.

“Wizkid FC, keep Fela’s name out of your mouths. You try to claim that your fake artiste is the new Fela. It is actually an insult,” Seun said.

He argued that Fela’s music transcended entertainment and was rooted in political resistance, cultural revolution and spiritual consciousness, insisting that no contemporary pop artist should be casually placed in that category.

“You people have no respect. If your lack of respect came from defiance, I would respect it. But it comes from ignorance,” he added.

The Afrobeat singer also criticised what he described as toxic fan culture, blaming overzealous fan rivalries for damaging collaboration and unity within Nigeria’s music industry.

According to him, constant comparisons between artists have made meaningful partnerships difficult.

“Some artists can’t even collaborate because of fan rivalries. Wizkid fans are online disrespecting Fela again. Why must you always involve Fela in your petty discussions?” he asked.

Seun further claimed that the need to constantly compare Wizkid to Fela suggests a lack of spiritual depth in the music being consumed.

“You cannot enjoy your artist’s music without comparing it to something else because spiritually, you are not satisfied,” he said.

He concluded by stressing that Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s legacy should not be used as a branding tool in online debates, warning fans to focus on appreciating their favourite artists without dragging historical figures into fan wars.
