The newly deployed permanent secretary of the Police Service Commission (PSC), William Alo, has pledged to make the police Nigerians’ friends.
“We need to do something different to make the police truly our friend and also give Nigerians a sense of security, especially in this troubled time,” he said.
A statement by Ikechukwu Ani, the Head of Press and Public Relations of PSC, on Monday in Abuja, said Mr Alo made the pledge at an event to mark his assumption of duty at PSC.
Mr Alo took over from Abubakar Ismaila, who was redeployed to the Federal Ministry of Sports and Youth Development.
The new perm sec, deployed from the Federal Ministry of Power, said the focus of the reinvigoration of the police would be in the area of appointment, promotion and discipline.
Mr Alo told the management staff of the commission that his administration would focus on strategies that would move the PSC forward.
Mr Alo also pledged to ensure that management and staff of the PSC work as a team, adding that his administration would also focus on staff welfare for enhanced efficiency and effectiveness.
The Nigerian police have a history of extorting and brutalising Nigerians resulting in a nationwide backlash that gave rise to the #EndSARS protests.
