2027: Atiku, Obi Eye SDP Alliance to Topple Tinubu, Says Adebayo

A seismic shift is brewing in Nigeria’s political landscape as Adewale Adebayo, the Social Democratic Party’s (SDP) former presidential candidate, reveals that heavyweights like ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s Peter Obi are in talks to join his party.

Speaking on Channels Sunday Politics, Adebayo dropped the bombshell that these political titans, alongside a roster of prominent figures, are eyeing the SDP as their new battleground to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

Adebayo confirmed that representatives of Atiku and Obi are actively negotiating a potential defection, signaling a possible unification of opposition forces under the SDP banner.

“People are joining my party, and we are welcoming them,” he declared, highlighting his hands-on role in the recruitment drive.

“You can see how active I am in welcoming them.” Yet, he cautioned that integrating these newcomers comes with challenges.

“The only little issue we have with some of them is changing the culture,” he noted, pointing to their past in less disciplined political environments. “Some of them are involved in Boy Scout-like activities and black market operations, but we are dealing with that”

The SDP stalwart didn’t mince words about the influx of big names. “All these people you have mentioned—El-Rufai, Atiku Abubakar, and even former Governor Peter Obi—are coming,” he asserted.

“A lot of people are coming, and we will welcome them.” While no defections are finalized, Adebayo shared that credible sources, including the party’s Financial Secretary, have confirmed ongoing discussions.

“Until somebody actually joins, we don’t know. But people have told me, and the Financial Secretary has also informed me, that they are talking. So we will welcome everybody.”

Adebayo made his vision clear, saying a united SDP could spell the end of Tinubu’s reign. He urged potential defectors to embrace the party’s disciplined culture and promised a formidable challenge to the APC.

“If they can stick to our culture and follow the way we do things in the SDP, and produce a good alternative for Nigerians, we are going to manifestly defeat the APC and retire President Tinubu to Lagos or wherever he chooses in Nigeria,” he vowed.
