2027: No Merger Deal with PDP, NNPP Yet, Says Peter Obi

Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has stated that there is currently no merger agreement with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), or any other political party.

Obi made this clarification during a press conference in Abuja on Thursday morning, addressing the current state of the nation. He emphasized that no formal agreements have been established with other parties.

He urged all Nigerians who care about the country’s future to unite in 2027 to defeat the All Progressives Congress (APC), which he accused of mismanaging the nation’s resources. Obi described the security situation in Nigeria as unfortunate, pointing out that many Nigerians die needlessly due to banditry, terrorism, and kidnapping for ransom.

According to Obi, corruption remains rampant in Nigeria, and the cost of governance has soared, contributing to a significant increase in public debt under the current administration of President Bola Tinubu of the APC. He criticized government officials for the willful mismanagement of public funds, particularly citing excessive foreign travel in 2024.

In the 2023 presidential election, Tinubu won in 12 of Nigeria’s 36 states and received a total of 8,794,726 votes—nearly two million votes more than his closest rival, Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, who garnered 6,984,520 votes. Obi, a first-time candidate, achieved an unprecedented 6,101,533 votes, while NNPP’s Rabiu Kwankwaso, the former governor of Kano State, finished fourth with 1,496,687 votes, securing victory in his home state.

Interestingly, both Obi and Kwankwaso were former members of the PDP before the last election, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for their departure from the party. Read More
