The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has revealed that its leading presidential hopefuls Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi are working together with a shared objective of unseating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general election.
The disclosure was made in Abuja during the unveiling of 1ADC, a political movement designed to mobilise party members and supporters across the country ahead of the next presidential race.
Party leaders said the initiative is aimed at uniting supporters of the three prominent politicians under one political structure as opposition forces begin early preparations for the 2027 contest.
National Coordinator of the 1ADC Movement, Lauretta Onochie, said the movement was created to foster unity within the party and demonstrate that political alliances are possible despite differences.
“We are here to inform the world, the state and our political leaders that we have come together to be united as one ADC,” Onochie said at the unveiling.
According to her, the platform will enable supporters of Obi, Atiku and Amaechi to work collectively in confronting the APC at the polls.
“Because Nigerians are asking an important question as to whether political parties can ever come together and unite, today we are here to say it is possible and we are taking that lead,” she added.
Onochie acknowledged that disagreements are inevitable in political organisations but emphasised that the party’s broader objective must take precedence over personal ambitions.
“We will unite after primaries, we will heal the wounds and we will not encourage anti-party activities. We will reach the grassroots, the poor and the young, and we will be a party for everyone. We will be strong, disciplined and united,” she assured.
The former National Chairman of the ADC, Ralphs Nwosu, said the adoption of the party as a coalition platform was intended to provide Nigerians with an opportunity to “reclaim their country.”
“We say we don’t want to continue complaining. It is not about who is the National Chairman or Secretary. The leadership of the ADC has been very deliberate. They don’t want to stand on anybody’s face. They want Nigerian citizens to take over the party,” Nwosu said.
He also described the party’s current National Chairman, David Mark, as a “military tactician” who would not be intimidated by political pressure.
Nwosu added that the party’s digital membership registration campaign has attracted significant interest nationwide, claiming that millions of Nigerians have already signed up within a few months.
According to him, the ADC is evolving beyond a traditional political party into what he described as a “citizens’ movement,” aimed at fostering unity and offering Nigerians an alternative platform ahead of the 2027 elections.
