2027: PDP Urged to Woo Peter Obi Back Amid Party Defections

As the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) grapples with internal challenges, Dan Ulasi, former PDP Chairman in Anambra State, has called for the party to invite Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, to rejoin its ranks ahead of the 2027 elections.

Obi, who served as PDP’s vice-presidential candidate in 2019 alongside Atiku Abubakar, left the party in 2022 to contest the 2023 presidential election under LP. Despite securing over six million votes and finishing third behind President Bola Tinubu and PDP’s Atiku, Obi’s campaign resonated widely. Ulasi believes Obi’s return could revitalize the PDP, which has been rocked by recent defections.

Notable PDP figures, including former vice-presidential candidate Ifeanyi Okowa and Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, have reportedly switched to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), with rumors of more governors considering similar moves. The defections follow a failed coalition between Obi, Atiku, and other opposition leaders aimed at challenging Tinubu in 2027, a plan the PDP Governors Forum has rejected.

Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show, Ulasi praised Obi’s integrity and leadership qualities, positioning him as a unifying figure for the PDP. “Peter Obi represents progress. He’s one of the few with the honor and performance record Nigeria needs,” Ulasi said. “If PDP seeks my advice, I’d leverage my relationship with Obi to convince him to return and help stop the current governance challenges in Abuja.”

Ulasi also criticized PDP governors defecting to APC, challenging them to publicly justify their achievements after eight years in office. He emphasized that the focus should be on leadership for Nigeria’s betterment, not party loyalty or personal ambition.

As the PDP navigates its future, Ulasi’s call underscores Obi’s enduring influence and the party’s need to regroup to remain competitive in 2027.
