24 Hours After Obasa’s Stormy Drama, 36 Lagos Lawmakers Reaffirm Support for Speaker Meranda

In a reaffirmation of support, 36 out of 40 members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have expressed their backing for the newly elected Speaker, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda.

“We stand united in our unwavering support for the leadership of Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, who consistently demonstrates her dedication to serving the people of Lagos. Any rumors suggesting her resignation are completely unfounded. She remains firmly in office and holds the confidence and support of 36 colleagues,” the lawmakers stated in a declaration made on Friday, February 28, 2025.

This announcement comes in the wake of chaos initiated by the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa. Following his removal from office on January 13, 2025, Obasa appeared at the Lagos Assembly on Thursday, February 27, 2025, claiming he was still the Speaker. He proceeded to conduct a session with only four members present, despite the legislative body being on an indefinite break.

In response, the 36 lawmakers, through a statement signed by Assembly spokesperson Steve Ogundipe, labeled Obasa’s actions as “unconstitutional and without legislative effect.”

The statement further clarified: “To avoid any confusion, the rules governing plenary sessions of the House are explicit. A valid session requires formal notice to all members, a quorum, an approved agenda, and the mace, which is an essential symbol of legislative authority. None of these procedural requirements were met during the purported session, as only five out of 40 members were present, rendering it unconstitutional and without legislative effect.”

In a strong show of unity, the lawmakers called on Lagos residents, Nigerians, and the global community to take note of Obasa’s “unsanctioned attempt to convene a plenary.” They also accompanied Speaker Meranda to the Lagos State High Court for the hearing of a case initiated by Obasa, who is challenging his removal from office.

Obasa had reportedly filed his application dated February 12, 2025, through his legal counsel. Notably, Meranda, elected immediately after Obasa’s removal, is the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. Read More
