Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo has called on the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to provide daily report of flight delays at all airports across the country.
Keyamo, while speaking at the ongoing stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos, said such a report should be made available to his office on a daily basis.
The minister expressed concerns against the backdrop of the persistent flight delays in the aviation industry with passengers’ lamentation, frustration and anger with airlines.
Senator Abdulfatai Buhari, Chairman, Senate Committee on Aviation, had raised the issue of flight delays saying it had become an hydra-headed monster in the industry.
He pointed out that when flights are delayed or cancelled, there should be alternatives to protect the passengers.
Airline Operators had also insisted that almost 100 percent of the causes of delay are not within the purview of airlines.
But Keyamo who said he was tired of getting complaints on flight delays from passengers said the daily report of causes of delays must be made available to the Nigerian public.
This he said would help in educating the passengers on the issue of flight delays.
Capt. Musa Nuhu, the Director-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), in his reaction to the Minister’s directive agreed with Keyamo’s position saying there is need for concentration on “consumer protection.”
“I quite agree with you that we need to do more on the issue of consumer protection,” Nuhu said.
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority provides regular updates on flight delays which it releases on monthly, quarterly, and annual bases.
