Nollywood: Yoruba Movie Lakatabu rakes in N200 million in Nigerian box office

Lakatabu’s strong box office performance is part of a broader trend of Yoruba-language films gaining prominence on streaming platforms, reflecting the genre’s growing international appeal

The movie “Lakatabu,” which premiered on June 21, 2024, quickly became a major hit in the Nigerian film industry. It is a Nollywood Indigenous Yoruba-language film produced by Odunlade Adekola, one of Nigeria’s top-grossing actors.

The film has achieved significant box office success, grossing N200 million in Nigeria and becoming one of the highest-earning Nollywood films of 2024.

During its opening weekend, Lakatabu earned N47 million and had over 11,000 cinema admissions, making it the third-highest opening of 2024. Within a week of its release, the film’s revenue surged to N94 million. By June 30, 2024, Lakatabu had grossed N126 million and subsequently surpassed the N168 million mark.

According to data from the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN), Lakatabu was the highest-grossing Nollywood film from June 21 to June 27, 2024, generating almost N65 million in that week alone. This strong box office performance is part of a broader trend of Yoruba-language films gaining prominence on streaming platforms, reflecting the genre’s growing international appeal.

Success in Nigerian box office places Lakatabu alongside other notable Yoruba-language Nollywood productions, such as Kayode Kasum’s “Ajosepo,” which grossed over N250 million, and Eniola Ajao’s “Ajakaju: Beast of Two Worlds,” which also grossed N250 million before transitioning to Amazon Prime.
