Gov. Makinde approves N80,000 minimum wage for Oyo workers
The Oyo State Government has approved a minimum wage of ₦80,000 for its workforce. The Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, stated that a Technical Committee established by the State Government recommended this change, which received approval from Governor Seyi Makinde.
Oyelade explained that the new salary scale will be implemented once the committee, comprising government and labor officials, completes the necessary adjustments.
He also recalled that last month, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) published employment statistics for 2024, which recognized Oyo as the most worker-friendly state in Southern Nigeria. This ranking is attributed to a significant decline in the state’s unemployment rate due to extensive hiring across various sectors.
In addition, the Commissioner noted that since Governor Makinde took office in 2019, the state has consistently paid workers’ salaries on the 25th of every month. He highlighted that the Governor initiated the previous minimum wage of ₦30,000 over four years ago and has ensured the steady payment of pensions, gratuities, and a 13th-month salary for both workers and pensioners.
