Details: Baruwa Fights to Reclaim NURTW Presidency from MC Oluomo
The struggle for leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) is far from over.
Musiliu Akinsanya, widely known as MC Oluomo, was sworn in as President on Monday, November 11, 2024. He succeeds Ibikunle Baruwa, who is attempting to secure a second term in office.
MC Oluomo’s inauguration as NURTW President—a goal he has pursued for years—came after he was elected by the Southwest region of the union on Saturday, November 9, 2024, under the union’s guidelines.
This development occurred just a day after the Court of Appeal in Abuja upheld Baruwa’s position as NURTW President.
Baruwa received the favorable ruling from the Court of Appeal on Friday, November 8, 2024. However, MC Oluomo was elected the following day in Osogbo, Osun State, and inaugurated on Monday.
According to those familiar with the development, “Baruwa has the Appeal Court judgment but does not meet the transport union’s constitutional requirement of being elected by his region for another term, while MC Oluomo fulfils that condition.”
Sources revealed that Baruwa, who is supported by the Nigerian Labour Congress led by Joe Ajaero, has begun moves to reclaim the NURTW presidency, using the court’s affirmation to his advantage.
Interestingly, MC Oluomo played a crucial role in Baruwa’s rise to the presidency in 2019. However, their relationship later deteriorated, leading to MC Oluomo’s aspiration to become the union’s leader. More
