Gov. Makinde approves Prince Abimbola Owoade as new Alaafin of Oyo

Governor Seyi Makinde has approved the appointment of Prince Abimbola Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo.

The announcement was made in a statement issued on Friday by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade.

According to the statement, Prince Owoade was selected following extensive consultations and traditional divinations conducted by the Oyo kingmakers, known as the Oyomesi.

“Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade has been recommended by the Oyomesi after thorough consultations and divinations, and this recommendation has been approved by Governor Seyi Makinde as the new Alaafin of Oyo,” the statement read.

The former Alaafin, Lamidi Adeyemi, passed away in April 2022, leading to a series of disputes between the state government and the Oyo kingmakers.

Initially, the kingmakers had selected Lukman Gbadegesin as the Alaafin-elect, but the state government did not support this choice.

In 2023, the kingmakers took the matter to court over the selection process.

It remains unclear whether this announcement resolves all the existing controversies surrounding the Alaafin’s stool. Read More
