Nnamdi Kanu Sacks Lawyers, Opts to Defend Himself in Ongoing Terrorism Trial
A dramatic twist unfolded on Thursday at the Federal High Court in Abuja as the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, abruptly dismissed his legal team and announced that he would personally conduct his defence in the ongoing terrorism trial.
After exchanging pleasantries with his lead counsel, Kanu quietly informed them that he would no longer require their services and that they could leave the courtroom.
The message was relayed to the trial judge, Justice James Omotosho, who sought confirmation directly from Kanu. The IPOB leader affirmed his decision, insisting on defending himself and rejecting the court’s offer to assign him a lawyer.
Following Kanu’s declaration, his lead counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, formally announced the withdrawal of all Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) representing him in the case.
Throughout the proceedings, Kanu repeatedly raised his voice, declaring that the court lacked jurisdiction to try him.
The separatist leader is expected to open his defence in the terrorism charges brought against him by the Federal Government, having earlier lost his no-case submission. Read More
