The House of Representatives has approved the second reading of the Ijebu State creation bill sponsored by Senator Gbenga Daniel, marking a major step toward Nigeria’s 37th state from present-day Ogun State

Ijebu State Closer Than Ever: House of Reps Approve Second Reading of Bill Sponsored by Gbenga Daniel
In what many have described as a defining moment for Nigeria’s Southwest region, the House of Representatives on Thursday approved the second reading of the long-awaited bill seeking to create Ijebu State from the present Ogun State.
The proposed legislation, championed by Senator Otunba Gbenga Daniel (Ogun East), represents a significant milestone in the decades-long struggle to actualise one of Nigeria’s oldest and most persistent state-creation demands.
If passed, the bill will restore the legacy of the old Ijebu Province—a region famed for its cultural richness, commercial excellence, and historical influence before and after Nigeria’s independence.
During plenary, members of the House cutting across political affiliations expressed overwhelming support for the bill, applauding Senator Daniel’s relentless advocacy and describing the initiative as a long-overdue recognition of the Ijebu people’s identity, unity, and contribution to national development.
Insiders revealed that an Ijebu–Remo Harmonisation Committee had earlier been constituted to address key structural issues—such as the proposed name, capital, and administrative framework—a move observers say underscores the maturity and collective resolve of stakeholders involved.
Speaking with journalists shortly after the session, Senator Daniel reaffirmed his commitment to the cause, emphasising that the pursuit of Ijebu State is anchored on equity and progress.
“This is not about division but development. The Ijebu people deserve a voice, an identity, and a fair share of governance. The dream of Ijebu State is a dream of balanced federalism,” he stated.
With the bill now moving to the committee stage for detailed legislative scrutiny and public hearing, optimism is growing among supporters who believe that the long-cherished dream of Ijebu State may finally become a reality.
If approved, Ijebu State will officially become Nigeria’s 37th state, reviving a proud sub-national bloc known for its entrepreneurial drive, educational excellence, and deep-rooted cultural heritage.
Observers say the move could also enhance local governance, deepen economic inclusion, and boost representation for one of the most historically influential communities in Southwest Nigeria. Read More
