Tiwa Savage Declares Afrobeats “Unstoppable,” Dismisses Decline Claims in Global Popularity
Nigerian music sensation Tiwa Savage has dismissed growing claims that Afrobeats is losing global momentum, declaring instead that the genre remains vibrant and “unstoppable.”
Her response follows recent remarks by prominent music executives, including Paul Okoye (Paulo) and DJ Big N, who suggested in separate interviews that Afrobeats might be experiencing its lowest point in two decades.
Speaking passionately at the Unstoppable Africans event, Savage refuted those assertions, stressing that Afrobeats continues to break boundaries across global charts, streaming platforms, and concert arenas.
“Afrobeats is the fastest growing genre in the world,” she said. “We kind of created it with nothing — no support, no infrastructure, no real belief even from our own people initially.”
The award-winning singer shared a personal reflection, revealing that she once felt ashamed of her African identity while growing up in London. However, she said Afrobeats has now reshaped global perceptions of Africa and made her “proud to be African.”
“I remember growing up in London and I was not happy being African. But now I’m so proud because of how big Afrobeats is growing,” she said.
Savage further reminded critics that Afrobeats has defied early predictions that it would be a passing trend.
“There was a conversation at one point that Afrobeats is going to have its 15 minutes of fame and then fade away. But we are still here. We are not slowing down. In fact, we are filling out stadiums, and we are getting the biggest songs on the charts right now,” she stated.
Highlighting Africa’s growing influence in global culture, Tiwa added:
“I don’t know how true this is, but apparently one in every four black persons is a Nigerian or an African.
“So, we are not going anywhere. As much as they are trying to quiet us down, the music is not going anywhere. We are Africans and we are unstoppable.”
Tiwa Savage’s remarks have since resonated widely among fans and fellow artistes, reinforcing her position as one of the leading voices in defending Afrobeats’ enduring global appeal. Read More
