Nigerian Afropop star Yemi Alade has opened up about her brief struggle with cigarette addiction during her teenage years, revealing how she eventually quit after realizing it was harming her health and affecting her voice.
Speaking in a candid conversation with Chude Jideonwo, the Johnny crooner said she experimented with smoking while at the university but quickly became dependent on it.
“Some people say I don’t smoke, I don’t this, I don’t that. When I was in the university I tried smoking. It didn’t work out. But before it didn’t work out, it worked out a bit too much,” she said.
Alade recounted that she began needing a cigarette before bedtime — a sign that the habit was becoming an addiction.
“I started needing to smoke before I go to bed. I was getting addicted to that lifestyle. But in public, I would hide the cigarette,” she explained.
The singer said that realization prompted her to reassess her choices.
“I told myself, ‘What kind of life is this?’ The discomfort of not being able to sleep without smoking and then hiding it in public — I didn’t like that. I made a decision that if I have to hide to do something, I won’t do it.”
Alade added that cigarettes were not only affecting her health but also taking a toll on her music career.
“They are not for me. And they harmed me; they affected my voice anyway. So I stopped. Smoking for me did not last up to a year,” she said.
The award-winning performer said her decision to quit was one of the early self-awareness choices she made as a teenager trying to navigate life and fame.
Yemi Alade’s revelation was made during an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, which has been circulating online through verified clips on social media. The singer’s comments have not been disputed or retracted. However, NewsHeadline247 has independently reviewed the interview excerpts to confirm the authenticity of her quotes before publication.
