Turaki Postpones PDP Inaugural NEC Meeting After Chaos at National Secretariat
The newly elected National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kabiru Turaki, has postponed the party’s inaugural National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting to Wednesday following chaotic scenes at the PDP national secretariat in Abuja.
Turaki, a former Minister of Special Duties, announced the postponement while addressing governors, Board of Trustees (BoT) members, and other party stakeholders who had already gathered for the meeting.
He explained that the decision became necessary due to disturbances earlier at the secretariat, which he blamed on individuals he described as “enemies of progress.”
“I told the FCT Police Commissioner that we are coming here today to have our inaugural NWC meeting and that our leaders would be here to witness this historic moment,” Turaki said.
“I also told him you’ll see on social media some flyers purporting to give notice of NEC and BoT by people who are no longer members of this party. He assured us he would protect us and provide security for us to conduct our meeting.”
Turaki commended the Commissioner of Police for ensuring the party leaders gained access to the secretariat but noted that the situation outside made it impossible to proceed.
“Due to some incidents that have occurred by these people who are the enemies of progress, who are the enemies of democracy, we have decided that this meeting will be postponed till tomorrow,” he said.
The chairman declared that the PDP under his leadership is ready to defend the party “at all costs,” even if it means making personal sacrifices for its progress.
Turaki insisted that those suspended during the Ibadan convention — including Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike; embattled National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu; and factional chairperson, Mohammed Abdulrahman — are no longer members of the PDP.
He further accused the Wike faction of orchestrating the chaos, alleging that teargas fired at party members was released by security operatives “sponsored by the faction.” Read More
