Lagos Police have suspended an unapproved Egungun festival in Oregun and arrested 12 suspects linked to inciting publications that threatened residents’ rights and movement

Police Stop Egungun Festival In Lagos Over Security Threats, Arrest 12 Suspects

The Lagos State Police Command has stopped plans for an unapproved Egungun festival in Oregun and arrested 12 suspects linked to handbills and social media posts that allegedly attempted to restrict residents’ movement and fundamental rights.

The development was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, by Police Public Relations Officer SP Abimbola Adebisi on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command.

The controversial publications, attributed to a group called Oje Parapo of Oregun, had warned the public to avoid free movement and expression ahead of an Egungun festival scheduled for November 27 and 28. According to the police, the messages sparked fear and tension among residents.

Acting swiftly, Commissioner of Police CP Olohundare Jimoh ordered the suspension of the event, describing it as a threat to public peace, safety, and order. He stressed that no individual or group had the authority to impose restrictions on Lagos residents or interfere with their fundamental human rights.

“The Command will not tolerate lawlessness in any part of the State,” the statement read, warning those planning unauthorized gatherings to desist or face the full weight of the law.

A police threat assessment revealed that the publications had already stirred widespread apprehension in the Oregun community, leading to the decision to stop the festival entirely. CP Jimoh reiterated that no cultural event capable of heightening tension or disrupting public order would be allowed under any circumstance.

In a related operation, the Command disclosed that it acted swiftly on November 23, 2025, in Mafoluku, Oshodi, after similar inciting materials were circulated. Twelve suspects were arrested during the operation and are being investigated, with prosecution expected to follow.

The CP reaffirmed that the Egungun festival organised by the Oje Parapo group would not hold, citing security concerns and the fear it had already instilled in residents. He warned that any attempt to undermine the peace and stability of Lagos State would be met with decisive legal action.

Residents were encouraged to go about their lawful activities without fear and to report any suspicious movement through the Command’s emergency lines. Read More
