ICYMI: Folorunso Alakija Donates 250-Bed Ultra-Modern Teaching Hospital to UNIOSUN
In a landmark move to strengthen healthcare delivery and medical education in Nigeria, billionaire businesswoman and philanthropist, Mrs Folorunso Alakija, has donated a 250-bed ultra-modern medical research and training hospital to Osun State University (UNIOSUN).
The facility, named Modupe and Folorunso Alakija Medical Research and Training Hospital, is located at Oke-Baale, Osogbo, and is equipped with cutting-edge medical infrastructure designed to serve as a major hub for healthcare delivery, research, and professional training.
The hospital boasts 250 admission beds, 20 clinical departments, five non-clinical departments, a community health unit, maternity and neonatal care services, advanced research and diagnostic laboratories, and four state-of-the-art operating theatres.
Additional facilities include CT scan and MRI suites, ultrasound and radiography units, 16 Intensive Care Units (ICUs), an ophthalmology centre, a modern mortuary, and several other specialised healthcare units.

Speaking at the commissioning and handover ceremony, former Vice President Professor Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, described the hospital as a transformative milestone for healthcare delivery in Nigeria and the West African sub-region.
“This hospital strengthens the bridge between theory and practice, education and service, research and real-world impact. In doing so, it positions Osun State and Nigeria more bluntly as serious contributors to medical knowledge production and not merely consumers of medicine and medical services,” Osinbajo said.
He added that the facility offers a new direction for the region.
“At a time when our region still sends too many patients abroad for advanced care, this institution points in a different direction — a future where care is delivered closer to home, medical professionals are trained to global standards within Africa, and research relevant to African realities is conducted by African scientists on African soil,” he stated.
Osinbajo further noted that the hospital has the capacity to evolve into a leading regional healthcare centre, serving Nigeria and the African continent.
Speaking on behalf of the donor family, Mrs Alakija, who also serves as Chancellor of UNIOSUN, called on other well-meaning Nigerians to invest in expanding healthcare infrastructure in the country.
“This is a vision for Nigerians where we can be proud to spend our currency on world-class healthcare. Your support is vital to make this dream a reality,” she said.

She disclosed that about 24 acres of land remain available for future expansion of the hospital.
“As we commission the Modupe and Folorunso Alakija Medical Research and Training Hospital today, we are not merely opening doors; we are opening destinies. This hospital stands as a beacon of hope, a promise of healing, and a bold step towards transforming healthcare in Osun State, throughout Nigeria, and across Africa,” Alakija added.
Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor of UNIOSUN, Professor Adebooye, urged the university’s Governing Council to ensure that only individuals of integrity and competence are appointed to manage and work in the hospital.
He stressed the need for leadership marked by responsibility, responsiveness, dignity, and total commitment to sustaining the vision behind the facility. Read More
