Six PDP members of the House of Representatives from Rivers State have defected to the APC, blaming unresolved leadership crisis within the opposition party

Six Rivers PDP Lawmakers Defect to APC, Cite Party Crisis
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suffered another major political setback in Rivers State as six of its members in the House of Representatives formally defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
NewsHeadline247 gathered that the lawmakers’ letters of defection were read on the floor of the House by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen during plenary on Tuesday.
The defecting lawmakers, who are widely regarded as loyalists of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, are Hon. Solomon Bob, Hon. Victor Obuzor, Hon. Dumnamene Dekor, Hon. Cyril Hart, Hon. Blessing Amadi, and Hon. Felix Nwaeke.
In their separate letters addressed to the Speaker, the lawmakers cited the prolonged and unresolved leadership crisis within the PDP as the primary reason for their exit, noting that the internal turmoil had made it increasingly difficult for them to function effectively within the party.
They explained that their decision to join the APC followed extensive consultations with political stakeholders and constituents, adding that the ruling party, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, provides a more stable and viable platform to deliver democratic dividends to their people.
The lawmakers maintained that their defection was driven by the need to align with a political structure capable of ensuring effective representation and good governance.
The latest defections come weeks after Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, defected from the PDP to the APC on December 5, 2025, a move that reshaped the state’s political landscape.
It also follows the earlier defection of 15 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, including the Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, who crossed over to the APC barely a week before the governor’s defection.
Political observers say the wave of defections underscores the deepening crisis within the Rivers PDP and further consolidates the APC’s growing dominance in the state ahead of future electoral contests.
