Fire Outbreak Destroys 10 Shops at Arena Market, Oshodi

A fire outbreak on Tuesday evening razed a section of the popular Arena Market in Bolade, Oshodi, Lagos State, destroying about 10 shops and goods worth millions of naira.

The incident was confirmed by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service in a statement issued by its Controller General, Mrs Margaret Adeseye.

According to the statement, the Service received a distress call at about 5:50 p.m., alerting authorities to the fire outbreak at the market. Firefighting units were immediately deployed and arrived at the scene within five minutes, at approximately 5:55 p.m.

Adeseye disclosed that the fire affected a section of the market made up of five 40-foot container shops arranged in two rows, bringing the total number of destroyed shops to 10.

She explained that the affected shops were largely used for the storage and sale of clothing materials, stocked mainly in bales, which contributed to the intensity of the blaze.

“The situation is firmly under control, and there is no risk of the fire spreading to other parts of the market,” the statement said.

Adeseye further assured members of the public that all necessary safety measures had been taken to protect lives and property. She added that an investigation would be conducted to determine the cause of the fire, with updates to be provided as necessary.
