INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan confirms the commission has finalised its 2027 election timetable and remains committed to credible polls

INEC Insists 2027 Elections Remain on Course Despite Delay in Electoral Act Amendment

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has firmly restated its readiness to conduct credible general elections in 2027, assuring Nigerians that preparations are advancing regardless of the ongoing delay in passing the proposed amendments to the Electoral Act.

INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan disclosed this Wednesday in Abuja during an interactive session with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs).

The commission has already completed work on the official election timetable and schedule of activities and is now awaiting final legislative action on the Electoral Act amendments currently before the National Assembly.

While INEC earlier submitted its recommendations to lawmakers, Amupitan acknowledged that the timing of the bill’s passage could necessitate adjustments to certain scheduled activities.

He, however, emphasized the commission’s unwavering commitment to delivering transparent and credible polls.

“Until the amended Electoral Act is passed and signed into law, INEC will continue to carry out its responsibilities in line with the existing legal framework,” Amupitan stated.

The reassurance comes amid public concerns over potential disruptions if the amendment process drags on, but INEC maintains that core preparations—including logistical planning, voter registration updates, and stakeholder engagements—are progressing steadily under the current Electoral Act.

Details of the finalized timetable and any potential adjustments will be released once the legislative process concludes. Read More
