INEC Defends 2027 Election Dates, Pledges Equal Voting Access Amid Ramadan Concerns

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured Nigerians that it will guarantee fair and equal access to vote in the 2027 general elections, despite growing concerns over the timing of the polls during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The commission had earlier announced that the Presidential and National Assembly elections would hold on February 20, 2027, while governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled for March 6, 2027. Party primaries are fixed between May 22 and June 20, 2026.

However, several stakeholders, particularly within the Muslim community, have raised objections, noting that February 20 falls within Ramadan — a sacred period of fasting, reflection and prayer expected to run from February 7 to March 8, 2027.

Atiku, Bashir Ahmad Raise Concerns

Former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, urged INEC to reconsider the date, warning that it clashes with a spiritually significant period for millions of Nigerian Muslims.

In a post on his X handle, Atiku described the proposed election date as falling “right in the middle of the Ramadan period,” stressing that fasting and religious obligations could affect participation.

Similarly, Bashir Ahmad, a former aide to late ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, called on the electoral body to review the schedule in the interest of inclusivity.

“If the goal is to promote full and inclusive involvement in the election process, holding such an important national event during Ramadan could create difficulties for many people,” he wrote.

INEC Cites Legal Framework

Responding in a statement, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, said the timetable was carefully drawn in line with the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electoral Act 2022, and the INEC Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections.

He explained that the regulations, in place since 2019, stipulate that presidential and National Assembly elections must hold on the third Saturday of February in a general election year, while governorship and state assembly polls follow two weeks later.

“Based on these existing laws and guidelines, the Commission fixed Saturday, February 20, 2027, for the Presidential and National Assembly elections, and Saturday, March 6, 2027, for the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections,” Haruna stated.

Consultations Ongoing

Despite defending its decision, INEC acknowledged concerns raised by stakeholders over the overlap with religious observances and other national events.

The commission said it is consulting with relevant groups and may, if necessary, seek legal adjustments — provided any changes comply strictly with constitutional and statutory provisions.

INEC reiterated its commitment to transparency, fairness and credible elections, assuring the public that updates would be communicated as discussions progress.
