Uncertainty Clouds Ibadan Chiefs’ Coronation as High Chiefs Seek Postponement, Palace Denies Rift

Uncertainty has trailed the planned coronation of three Ibadan High Chiefs to beaded-crown wearing Obas, as the affected chiefs have formally requested a postponement, casting doubt on the scheduled ceremony.

The development comes amid swirling rumours of a rift between the Olubadan palace and the Oyo State Government—claims that have now been firmly dismissed by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Chief Adeola Oloko, the monarch clarified that there is no disagreement between the palace and Governor Seyi Makinde, describing such reports as unfounded.

“The Olubadan is hale, hearty, and fully present in Ibadan, carrying out his royal duties. There is no rift whatsoever between Kabiyesi and the state government,” the statement noted.

According to the palace, the three High Chiefs slated for elevation have officially informed the Olubadan of their inability to attend the coronation ceremony and have requested that the event be postponed. This request has already been communicated to the state government through the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters.

The Oyo State Government had earlier fixed the coronation for April 3 at Mapo Hall, Ibadan. Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Demola Ojo, had confirmed that the elevation ceremony would proceed as scheduled.

However, the chiefs’ request for postponement has now thrown the planned event into uncertainty, even as speculation continues over the political undertones surrounding the elevation.

Observers have linked the move—particularly the elevation of Ali—to potential political calculations ahead of the 2027 governorship race in Oyo State, where he is reportedly being considered as a contender under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Despite the growing speculation, the palace insists the situation remains procedural, urging the public to disregard rumours and await official updates on a new date for the coronation.
