Former Nigeria international and ex-Bendel Insurance coach, Lawrence Akpokona, is battling for his life at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital following a severe spinal cord injury.
Akpokona has been hospitalised since October 2025 and has undergone three major surgeries. Despite medical efforts, his condition remains critical, with urgent need for continued care and financial assistance.
The Chairman of the Advocacy for Nigeria Football Reform Concepts, Harrison Jalla, raised the alarm over the coach’s deteriorating condition, describing it as a matter of urgency.
“Coach Lawrence Akpokona has served Nigerian football with distinction. This is the time for the football family and the government to rally around him in his moment of need,” Jalla said.
The development has triggered calls for intervention from the governments of Edo State and Delta State, as well as football authorities including the Nigeria Football Federation and the National Sports Commission.
Stakeholders have urged swift action to support the ailing coach, noting his contributions to the growth of football in the country.
During his playing career, Akpokona was a key figure at Bendel Insurance and also represented Nigeria at international level. He later transitioned into coaching, where he played a vital role in nurturing young talents across various clubs.
His current condition has sparked widespread concern within the football community, with many calling for immediate assistance to save the life of the respected veteran.
