The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced a total and indefinite nationwide strike, set to begin at 12 a.m. on Tuesday, following the Federal Government’s suspension of the Professional Allowance Table (PAT).

Describing the government’s decision as “unfortunate and unacceptable,” NARD said its members, after extensive deliberations, resolved to embark on a comprehensive industrial action that will continue until their demands are met.

Among the key demands, NARD is calling for:

  • Immediate reversal of the decision to halt the PAT implementation from April 2026.
  • Payment of promotion arrears and outstanding salaries owed to doctors across the country.
  • Prompt conclusion of the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) payment process.
  • Settlement of the outstanding 19 months’ arrears under the PAT.

The decision emerged from an extraordinary virtual meeting of NARD’s National Executive Council (NEC) on April 4, 2026, according to Secretary-General Dr. Shuaibu Ibrahim.

The NEC has urged all members to remain united and committed to the industrial action until the government meets the association’s demands, emphasizing that the fight against the suspension of PAT will be pursued to a logical conclusion.
