President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to former Ogun State governor, Gbenga Daniel, on the occasion of his 70th birthday, describing him as a steadfast progressive, seasoned administrator, and a key figure in Nigeria’s political landscape.

In a personally signed statement dated April 6, 2026, the President reflected on their longstanding political alliance, which dates back to the lead-up to his 1999 election as Governor of Lagos State. Tinubu revealed that Daniel played a pivotal role in mobilising support for his candidacy, notably rallying the influential Heritage Group of Yoruba professionals to secure electoral victory and ensure a smooth transition.

Commending Daniel’s political journey, Tinubu highlighted his resilience and consistent alignment with progressive ideals. While recalling Daniel’s earlier defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), under which he became Ogun State governor in 2003, the President expressed satisfaction that the Ogun East senator has since returned to the progressive fold and now plays a significant role within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Beyond politics, Tinubu praised Daniel’s achievements as a renowned engineer and entrepreneur. He noted that Daniel founded Kresta Laurel in 1990, an electro-mechanical engineering firm that has grown into a leading force in elevator installation and maintenance across Nigeria.

Reflecting on Daniel’s tenure as governor, the President credited him with driving major developmental initiatives in Ogun State, including industrialisation policies, public-private partnerships, infrastructure expansion, and educational advancement. He cited landmark projects such as the establishment of Tai Solarin University of Education and the launch of the state’s first agro-allied cargo airport project.

Tinubu also acknowledged Daniel’s continued political relevance, pointing to his election as Senator representing Ogun East in 2023 as evidence of sustained public trust and influence.

“As Otunba clocks 70, I thank him on behalf of our teeming APC members and the entire nation for his service to Ogun State and Nigeria,” the President stated, while wishing him good health, longevity, and continued contributions to national development.

He further extended warm wishes to Daniel’s wife, Olufunke, and the entire Daniel family, praying for enduring grace and unity.

The tribute not only celebrates Daniel’s legacy in governance and enterprise but also underscores his enduring alliance with Nigeria’s current leadership, reinforcing his status as a pivotal figure in the country’s evolving democratic journey.
