As 2027 approaches, pressure mounts on PDP in Ado-Odo/Ota to present credible, electable candidates capable of challenging APC dominance in Ogun State

Why PDP Must Get Its Candidate Choices Right in Ado-Odo/Ota Ahead of 2027 Elections

The road to 2027 is already taking shape in Ogun State’s Ado-Odo/Ota political landscape, and for the Peoples Democratic Party, the message from stakeholders and observers is clear: only the best, most credible, and electable candidates can mount a serious challenge against the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Findings by newsheadline247 indicate that party leaders within the local government are quietly but deliberately reassessing their political strategy, with a strong emphasis on candidate selection for both the Federal House of Representatives and the Ogun State House of Assembly seats. The mood within the party suggests a recognition that the 2027 elections will not be won on sentiment or party loyalty alone, but on the strength, appeal, and credibility of those presented to the electorate.

Political observers argue that Ado-Odo/Ota, being one of the most politically strategic and densely populated local governments in Ogun State, demands a higher level of calculation from any opposition party hoping to upset the APC’s dominance. The PDP, in particular, faces the dual task of rebuilding internal cohesion while simultaneously projecting strength through its candidates.

A social commentator, Femi Omidiji, who spoke to our correspondent, stressed that the party cannot afford to gamble with its choices at this critical time. According to him, the APC remains a formidable political machine with deep grassroots structures and significant incumbency advantages, making it dangerous to confront with anything less than top-tier candidates.

“The reality is that the APC is not a party you challenge with weak profiles or political experiments,” Omidiji said. “If the PDP is serious about reclaiming relevance in Ado-Odo/Ota, then it must present candidates who are not only qualified on paper but are visible, credible, and deeply connected to the people. Elections at this level are won by individuals as much as by parties.”

He further argued that the PDP’s recent internal crises at the national level have left little room for further missteps at the grassroots. In his view, the party must now shift from survival mode to strategic consolidation, beginning with the careful screening of aspirants.

“This is not the time for trial and error,” he added. “The PDP has just emerged from a period of leadership turbulence, and the electorate is watching closely. What the party needs now are sellable candidates—people with proven capacity, political experience, and the ability to inspire confidence among voters who may be disillusioned with the status quo.”

There is also a growing sentiment among party faithful that electability must outweigh internal patronage or zoning considerations. Many believe that the PDP’s past electoral setbacks in the area were partly due to the imposition of candidates who lacked grassroots acceptance or the political weight to withstand the APC’s campaign machinery.

Insiders say consultations are ongoing across wards and party structures, with a focus on identifying aspirants who possess not just popularity, but also the financial muscle, strategic thinking, and communication skills required for modern political campaigns. The increasing sophistication of voters in Ado-Odo/Ota, driven by urbanisation and access to information, has made it imperative for candidates to go beyond rhetoric and demonstrate real competence.

However, speaking to Newsheadline247, the Ogun State Chairman of the PDP, Dr. Abayomi Tella, expressed strong confidence in the party’s preparedness for the 2027 electoral cycle, assuring that the process leading to the emergence of candidates would be guided by fairness, transparency, and equity. He noted that the leadership is committed to ensuring that only credible and widely acceptable aspirants with the required capacity will emerge from the party’s primaries.

The PDP in Ogun State positions itself to challenge the dominance of the All Progressives Congress across all levels in the state, including the governorship.

Tella emphasised that the PDP is determined to avoid the pitfalls of the past by prioritising merit and electability above all other considerations, adding that the party’s ultimate goal is not merely participation but outright victory.

“We are approaching the 2027 elections with a clear sense of purpose and responsibility to the people of Ogun State,” he said. “Our primaries will be conducted with utmost fairness and equity, giving every aspirant a level playing field. At the end of the process, only candidates with proven capacity, strong grassroots appeal, and the ability to win elections will fly the party’s flag.”

He further declared that the PDP is leaving nothing to chance in its bid to reclaim power in the state.

“We will leave no stone unturned in our preparations. The PDP is not going into the next election just to contest—we are going in to win. Our focus is on presenting the most qualified, credible, and sellable candidates who can inspire confidence among voters and deliver victory for the party across all positions, including the governorship,” Tella added.

As the countdown to 2027 gradually begins, the stakes could not be higher. For the PDP, the election represents more than just another contest—it is an opportunity to reassert itself as a viable alternative in Ogun State politics. However, that opportunity hinges largely on whether the party can look inward, make difficult but necessary decisions, and present candidates who embody both credibility and capacity.

Anything short of that, analysts warn, may once again leave the opposition trailing behind a well-entrenched APC.
