Presidential spokesman Daniel Bwala says Babachir Lawal’s allegations of manipulated ADC primaries in favour of Atiku Abubakar could undermine Nigeria’s national security if proven true

Bwala Says Babachir Lawal’s Allegations Against Atiku Could Undermine National Security

A fresh political war of words erupted on Tuesday as presidential spokesman Daniel Bwala launched a blistering attack on former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, warning that recent allegations made against former Vice President Atiku Abubakar could pose a threat to Nigeria’s national security if found to be true.

Bwala’s reaction followed Lawal’s dramatic resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and his allegation that the party’s recently concluded primaries were manipulated in favour of Atiku and his supporters.

Taking to X, the presidential aide questioned both the substance and origin of Lawal’s resignation statement, while expressing concern over the implications of the claims.

“WOW, Is it ChatGPT or Grok that Babachir Lawal used in writing the ratio decidendi of his resignation from ADC?” Bwala wrote.

He added: “What he said about the candidate of ADC (if validated or verified) is scary and will undermine the national security of Nigeria.”

Bwala also turned his attention to the National Democratic Coalition (NDC), the political platform Lawal has reportedly indicated he may join following his exit from the ADC. According to him, the coalition’s preferred presidential hopeful subscribes to political ideas that are inconsistent with democratic values and principles of justice.

“The NDC that Babachir seeks to join also has a candidate whose ideological beliefs about democracy and good governance is equally a flawed thought-process and repugnant to natural justice, equity and good conscience,” he stated.

The presidential spokesman further revisited Lawal’s recent public comments regarding Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, arguing that the former SGF’s previous assessments of Obi conflicted with his present political alignment.

“You need to hear in Babachir’s own words on Arise Primetime and Channels TV interviews about Peter Obi which aired only few weeks ago, to understand what in law we call ‘confessional statement’,” Bwala said.

In a broader critique of the opposition coalition seeking to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, Bwala dismissed earlier claims of unity among opposition leaders, arguing that recent developments had exposed deep cracks within their ranks.

“Just two or three months ago, these people were talking about how they were made from heaven as one indivisible and indisoluble coalition sent by God to come and rescue Nigeria; and alas all their intentions and plans have been exposed,” he wrote.

Bwala concluded by asserting that the unfolding political drama had only reinforced President Tinubu’s advantage ahead of the next electoral cycle.

“With this, the choice for 2027 has never been more clearer. President Tinubu in all honesty is a million miles ahead of them. Take this to the bank and cash it.”

The latest exchange comes barely a day after Lawal announced his resignation from the ADC, alleging that the party’s primaries were “massively rigged” in favour of Atiku. The former SGF also vowed to work with like-minded political allies to prevent the former vice president from emerging as Nigeria’s president in the 2027 general election.

The development is expected to further intensify political maneuvering and realignments as parties and coalitions begin positioning themselves ahead of what is shaping up to be a fiercely contested 2027 presidential race.
